HMC5883L is a 3-axis digital compass from Honeywell. Communication with the HMC5883L is simple and all done through an I2C interface. There is no on-board regulator, so a regulated voltage of 2.16-3.6VDC should be supplied.
Adds CAREFREE MODE. Gyro Lock
A Compass is also needed for GPS to work.
Importantly the MAG can be located anywhere to allow the MAG to be remotely located away from magnetic and electromagnetic interference in the center of the multicopter. Unlike a car GPS which can assume the car is driving forwards – a multicopter can fly in any direction and the compass (MAG) is critical to good navigation. For this reason a decided MAG had to be duplicated; for definative nav set also your local area declination -see http://magnetic-declination.com/.
This breadboard-friendly board breaks out pins to a 4-pin 0.1″ pitch header and it also has two 10k pull-up resistors on the I2C lines.
